Ever since my car broke down Christmas week I get at least one call/text from my brother, mom, and or dad per day on what the word on my car is, currently it’s that they are shopping around for new heads or just a new-used engine, this continues to go down the rabbit hole of every one wanting me to buy a new car because I guess you aren’t truly a responsible person until you have car payments? I don’t know. This also extends to most people in my workplace. On a daily basis I would say I get asked what the status is about 5 times. I’m content waiting it out. I’m in no rush. How do I politely tell everyone to fuck off?

Cross cab I saw the other day because it makes about as much sense.

It only makes sense if you are constantly throwing money at the car, due to it having problems. Other than that, or maybe to build credit, I don’t really see the point in adding the extra expense. My thoughts will probably change on this when the gas prices go up.

Maybe that’s all they have for an opening line. Also, you should buy a car. Car payments put hair on your chest...or something.

I haven’t had anything actually break on the car in a really long time. This is the first time that it totally died on me and it’s only going to be 2-3k? Cheaper than a new car

Ha! it’s definitely not an isolated instance. Worst thing is if any throws out an idea of what I should buy it’s always an SUV and I always laugh in their face

Then yeah, I wouldn’t worry about getting a new car. I can’t deny that I would like to have a newer car, in fact I tried to buy one recently, but my 4Runner has only had 3 things fail on it(one of them was because of a shop that repaired the first) in the 4 years I’ve had it and it had 150k miles on it when I’ve got it. It needs a few things, but none of the things it needs mean it needs replaced.

This looks like it is in my neck of the woods. Why do they care? Do they just have nothing else that they know about you, that this is their go to opening line? Coworkers that is. Family will always be this nosy.

Yup. Other people don’t get why you’d care about any car enough to repair it instead of throwing it out and getting a new one. In fact, caring at all about your car seems to make some people confused and frightened.

Maybe try telling them so much information in such excruciating detail that they won’t ask as often?

Had to deal with a similar situation in my family. 3k repair bill? Sell the car, take on another 15k in loans. Makes sense.

I’ll tell you what a cross cab in that color combo isn’t half bad, I’d probably be crazy enough to drive that(I’m weird like that).

Much better than that seafoam green you usually see these in.

That I may have to do. Hell, when it first happened I was telling my mom I might just bring it in to my garage and take the engine out myself. Her response: “There’s no way you can do that!” I don’t think my mom knows anything about me

In your mom’s eyes you’re still like 12 years old. I think that’s forever until you have a kid.

Exactly. I have replaced things on my car because they were worn or old, bushings, fluids etc., had a few fuses blow, boost leaks from old cracked hoses. Typical cheap stuff and everyone things my car is constantly in need of mending. Nah, I just like wrenching and finding things to do

Ah, I love how people always jump to the car payment option when they have a huge repair bill. Unless the car is a pile of shit which is a rolling death trap, the math almost always works out in favor of fixing your car and living within your means.

On a related note, I always hate it when people ask me, “So how long do you think my car will last after this repair?” You know, if I knew that I wouldn’t be fixing your car, I’d be rolling around in money because a crystal ball would bring me all the fucking money in the world.

Seriously, do people really think tool trucks sell crystal balls???
